Q4 is when a bad address costs the most. Volume is at its peak, the carriers add holiday surcharges on top of their normal fees, and a parcel that bounces back in mid-December can miss Christmas altogether.
The stakes are big this year. The National Retail Federation expects November and December sales to grow 4.2% to $1.013 trillion. Online keeps taking a bigger share: e-commerce was 17.1% of US retail sales in the second quarter of 2026, according to the Census Bureau, and 18.3% in the 2025 holiday quarter before seasonal adjustment. Over last year's Thanksgiving weekend, 134.9 million people shopped online.
Here are the 2026 dates and fees in one place, and what to check before Black Friday on November 27.
When do holiday shipping surcharges start in 2026?
USPS peak prices started on October 4. UPS and FedEx residential surcharges start October 25 and 26, and step up to their top rate from November 22 and 23.

The USPS increase sits on top of the separate 8% time-limited increase that has applied since April 26, 2026. The Postal Regulatory Commission approved the peak prices on September 9 (Docket CP2026-10). High-volume UPS and FedEx shippers can also pay weekly peaking surcharges of up to $8.00 per package; check your account.
What are the 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?
These are the carriers' own recommended last days to ship for delivery before Christmas, within the contiguous US.
| Carrier and service | Last day to ship | Delivery target |
|---|---|---|
| FedEx Ground Economy | Tue, Dec 15 | By Dec 24 |
| USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail | Thu, Dec 17 | Before Dec 25 |
| FedEx Ground and Home Delivery | Dec 17 to Dec 23, by transit time (5 days to 1 day) | By Dec 24 |
| USPS Priority Mail | Fri, Dec 18 | Before Dec 25 |
| USPS Priority Mail Express | Sat, Dec 19 | Before Dec 25 |
| UPS 3 Day Select / FedEx Express Saver | Mon, Dec 21 | By Dec 24 |
| UPS 2nd Day Air / FedEx 2Day | Tue, Dec 22 | By Dec 24 |
| UPS Next Day Air / FedEx overnight | Wed, Dec 23 | By Dec 24 |
| UPS Ground | Varies by route: check UPS time in transit | By Dec 24 |
Every one of those dates assumes the address is right. A parcel that has to be corrected, or comes back to you, is running against the same deadline. The UPS holiday page puts it simply: "Plan early, confirm the recipient's address, select a service..."
Why a bad address costs more in December
In any month, FedEx charges $25.50 and UPS $25.25 to correct an address (here's the full breakdown). At peak, a parcel that comes back also pays the residential surcharge again on the reship, plus $0.75 to $0.80 in peak surcharge, plus the support ticket from a customer whose gift didn't arrive.
Then there are returns. Retailers surveyed by the NRF and Happy Returns expect 17% of holiday sales to be returned. A gift that turns up on December 28 is a good candidate for one of them.
A pre-Black Friday checklist
- Get your baseline. Count last quarter's address correction lines on your FedEx and UPS invoices. That's the number to beat this season.
- Turn on address checks at checkout before November 22. That's the week the top-tier surcharges start. A real-time check catches a missing apartment number or a mistyped ZIP while the customer is still on the page. The retail page shows how it works.
- Batch-check returning customers. 11.8% of Americans moved in 2024, and closer to 14% in Colorado, Texas, Arizona and Washington. Run your customer list through validation before the first holiday email goes out. Every state's rate is here.
- Clean the email list before the Black Friday send. Order confirmations and shipping updates go to that list too. Our bounce-rate guide has six steps to get under 2%.
- Check the phone numbers you text. If delivery updates go out by SMS, a landline usually can't receive them. A phone check returns the line type, so you can switch those customers to email.
- Publish your own cutoffs a few days early. Put "order by" dates on your site that leave room for a correction, not the carrier's last possible day.
- Plan the January return wave. Decide your holiday return window and staffing now, while you still have a choice.
If you dispatch your own routes or run a 3PL, check the manifest before routes are built; the logistics page has the workflow.
Where DQVerify fits
DQVerify checks the address, email and phone on an order with one API key. US addresses are processed with USPS CASS Certified software supplied by a USPS licensee, and address validation covers 240+ countries and territories. Call it from checkout through the API, or upload your customer list as a CSV before peak and download a result for every row. Native Shopify and Salesforce connectors come with Enterprise plans.
Each check uses one credit per module. In the 20,000-credit packs, a US address check costs $0.04, an email check $0.035 and a mobile number check $0.04, so checking all three on an order costs about $0.12 (pricing). One avoided $25.50 correction covers more than 200 fully checked orders. You can start with 100 free credits for 14 days, no credit card, and test it on last season's problem orders.
